DirectX is a free collection of special APIs designed for Windows users to handle gaming and multimedia tasks. It provides incredibly realistic sound and visual content rendering tiniest details.

Description

DirectX is a set of APIs (application programming interfaces) for Windows users designed to reveal all three-dimensional visual and interactive audio effects used in computer games and other types of multimedia. The latest update – DirectX 11 – offers a great many enhanced functions and provides increased performance. It uses the power of modern multi-core processors and supports advanced technologies of creating shadows and textures such as tessellation. As a result you have more realistic three-dimensional animation and graphic that render minute details of the objects. This version also supports GPGPU technology.

DirectX package includes such components:

  • Direct3D is the most popular API that renders 3D graphics.

Direct3D 11 features multithreaded rendering, tessellation, compute shaders, new texture compression algorithms, and increased texture cache.

  • Direct2D is a 2D graphics API that gives top-quality rendering of bitmaps, text, and 2D geometry.
  • DXGI (DirectX Graphics Infrastructure) enumerates monitors and adapters, manages swap chains for Direct3D starting with version 10.
  • DirectCompute is designed for GPU computing.
  • DirectWrite is a font rendering API that features sub-pixel rendering, bi-directional anti-aliasing, and more.
  • DirectSound passes audio information to the sound card and provides mixing and recording sound, adding various effects to it such as echo, reverb, and flange, controlling capture effects during audio capture. It also offers hardware accelerated buffers and 3D audio effects.
  • DirectMusic for playback of music in Microsoft formats. DirectMusic and DirectSound were united in one component DirectX Audio starting with DirectX 8.
  • DirectShow is used in multimedia technologies and provides high-quality video and audio playback or capture.
  • DirectPlay is designed for communication and allows you to create network applications such as online games. It was deprecated after DirectX 8 for the benefit of Games for Windows  – Live.
  • DirectInput processes the data coming from the keyboard, mouse, joystick, and other game controllers.
  • DirectSetup is responsible for installing of this package.
  • DirectX Media Objects provides functional support for streaming objects.
